Digital Video

D7100I, of course, have been taking video of my children their whole lives, mainly using my DSLRs.

After being a nerd about digital audio and photography, videography seemed like the next logical step. Editing moving images isn’t that much different than editing still images. Using an non-linear editor isn’t that much different than using a digital audio workstation.

I freelance as a videographer, mainly recording live [acoustic] music performances. My main gig is with the Frederick Symphony Orchestra, recording their concerts, as well as creating video content for streaming.

A DSLR can produce very high video quality (due to its large image sensor), but recording times are typically restricted. If I’m to record a full-length live performance, I need a camera capable of recording for more than an hour at a time. So, I also own a few Panasonic micro four-thirds camera with no time limit restrictions. Sony, for its newer Alpha 6000 series of cameras, also has removed the time limit restriction. My newest toy is a Sony a6400, which I purchased for its slow motion capabilities.

I use DaVinci Resolve for post-production (editing, motion graphics, color grading, etc.). For the orchestra, I still put things on Blu-Ray [via Adobe Encore]. I’m also comfortable using Adobe Premiere.
